Lafond Vineyard Santa Rita Hills
2014 Pinot Noir
The Santa Rita Hills is a small appellation at the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley that has gained national recognition for its Pinot Noir.
The Valley runs west to east permitting the late afternoon ocean fog to roll into the Santa Rita Hills, where it lingers until early morning.
The surrounding hills trap the fog before it is dissipated in the wider Santa Ynez Valley.
In the summer the fog moderates the normally warm days of the valley, cooling the grapes at night. Warm days and cool nights are essential to the developement of Pinot Noir providing the necessary acid/sugar balance. In the winter when frost is our biggest concern.
A layer of fog over the vineyard can provide protection.
We have over 75 acres of Pinot Noir in our own vineyards. Not only do soils vary from block to block but there are 8 different clones of just this variety. The whole permits Winemaker, Bruce McGuire, to create well balanced wines from many different components..
Winemaker's Comments: This year's Lafond Vineyard Pinot Noir is made up of the following Pinot Noir Clones, 20% Martin Ray Clone, 20% Clone 667, 30% Clone 777 and 30% Pommard Clone.
As Winemaker Bruce McGuire says "A perfect fit."
