Arita Hills Vineyard Santa Rita Hills
2013 Pinot Noir
The Santa Rita Hills is a small appellation at the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley that has gained national recognition for its Pinot Noir.
The Valley runs west to east permitting the late afternoon ocean fog to roll into the Santa Rita Hills, where it lingers until early morning. The surrounding hills trap the fog before it is dissipated in the wider Santa Ynez Valley.
In the summer the fog moderates the normally warm days of the valley, cooling the grapes at night. Warm days and cool nights are essential to the developement of Pinot Noir providing the necessary acid/sugar balance. In the winter when frost is our biggest concern. A layer of fog over the vineyard can provide protection.
Arita Hills is a small vineyard, adjcent to our own, which we farm and harvest for the owner. It has consistently produced high quality fruit of which we select the finest to bottle under the Arita Hills Vineyard designate label.
Winemaker's comments: This 2013 Arita Hills Pinot Noir is 73% clone 667 and 27% clone 115. This combination seems to express the feminine side of Pinot Noir with suppleness and intense aromatics. This was the second year of drought and caused small clusters resulting in intense wine.
