Sustainability in Practice Certified Wine
Martin Ray, an early proponent of Pinot Noir in California, began planting his vineyards in the 1950’s. And in 1982, Lafond Vineyard in Sta. Rita Hills, planted their first clones of his renowned vines. This is the final vintage made from those “old school” vines. Self rooted, and with nearly forty years of age, the fruit from these vines has dense, concentrated flavor.
Lafond Vineyard is ideally situated to produce Pinot Noir exhibiting the unique and exotic flavor profile one finds in only a few regions of the world. Specific areas within our vineyard exhibit elevated concentration and complexity due to soil type and exposure to the elements. We have planted eight distinct clones of Pinot Noir, each with subtle differences in flavor and aroma.
Winemaker Comments: This is the last vintage of Martin Ray originally sourced from Sanford Vineyard and Benedict Vineyard in 1982. The self-rooted vines had declined from nematoes and the extended drought. We are replanting with Clone 37 which is from Mt. Eden Vineyard and was Martin Ray's original vineyard planted in the 1940's.
Tasting Notes: The 2016 Martin Ray Pinot Noir is a dark garnet color, with bright purple reflections. Aromas of dried raspberry and lilac are followed by rich, tilled earth. Flavors of macerated red fruit, cola, and dried herbs round out the palate. Light-bodied with nice acidity, drink alongside quail, grilled pork, or baked brie.
