Sustainability in Practice Certified Wine
In order to create one of our most aromatic Pinot Noirs, winemaker Bruce McGuire focuses on the 777 Clone from the Lafond Vineyard. The 777 clone benefits from the mixture of ancient marine based soil found throughout the Sta. Rita Hills, and the river deposited soil from the Santa Ynez River. The 777 clone highlights the complexity of the Lafond Vineyard site, first with its aroma and finally with its depth of flavor.
Lafond Vineyard is ideally situated to produce Pinot Noir exhibiting the unique and exotic flavor profile one finds in only a few regions of the world. Specific areas within our vineyard exhibit elevated concentration and complexity due to soil type and exposure to the elements. We have planted eight distinct clones of Pinot Noir, each with subtle differences in flavor and aroma.
Winemaker Comments: 777 is one of the more aromatic, forward fruited clones of Pinot Noir. Starting in 2014 we found extended maceration, plus or minus 50 days, added to mid-palate plushness and finish. Continued drought resulted in small canopies and small berried clusters. Ripe, concentrated flavors and great length give us a complex version of 777.
Tasting Notes: The 2016 Lafond Vineyard 777 Pinot Noir is a deep ruby color with crimson reflections. This wine has aromas of freshly picked raspberry, brandied cherry, and red licorice. Bright flavors of cranberry and cherry pie combine with savory black tea. Medium-bodied with plenty of tannin, pair this wine with sautéed mushrooms, casseroles, and beef bourguignon.
