Hedging and Netting

The Pinot Noir is at the point where it needs to be covered with nets to protect the grapes from birds. As veraison develops so do the birds appetite for grapes, but before we cover the vines we will need to hedge both top and sides. The photo shows the lateral growth of some of the canes. These are six foot rows so that, left un-hedged, it would be a virtual jungle out there.

The Syrah in the photo below has already been hedged. Canes grow longer and faster in Syrah and harvest is later. Syrah, generally, requires very little netting since the birds having gorged themselves on Pinot Noir lose their appetite for grapes. This also is our photo-oppotunity arch, or more precisely post and beam, that frames the valley and vineyard below.
