20006 Chardonnay Wente Clone in Stainless Steel
This limited bottling of Chardonnay was grown in a young, low vigor section of Lafond Vineyard’s 6 acre Wente Clone Block originally planted in 1976. Bruce, David, and Andy mapped out a strategy whereby new Wente Clone vines were inter-planted into our best old block thus giving us greater vine denisty to insure root compeition while increasing our yields in that same amount of land.

The resulting small yields per vine and the difficult growing conditions (low nutrient marine sand and gravel that retains very little water) combined with one of the world’s best microclimates for Chardonnay sets the stage for a powerful expression of depth and fruit intensity.

Winemaker Bruce made this selection of vines specifically for fermentation in stainless steel at cool temperatues to allow a pure expression of the vineyard site. This different expression of Chardonnay is especially interesting when compared to wines made from neighboring vines such as the Lafond Vineyard Chardonnay or the Santa Barbara Winery Chardonnay Reserve, both fermented in oak barrels.

While still exhibiting the richness of Chardonnay, this wine is a little leaner than its’ oak aged cousins. Try with roasted or poached fish and delight with sushi parings. Cheese selections: Gruyere, Cheddar, hard and semi hard sheep’s milk, Gouda. .
